The Varsity at the University of Baltimore, a privatized student-housing project led by developer Potomac Holdings of Bethesda, Md., is now under construction. It will offer 323 beds within 114 apartments at the corner of Maryland Avenue and West Biddle Street. The 11-story building is currently under construction and slated for occupancy in the fall 2012 semester.
The project marks the first time that developers have undertaken the new construction of student oriented housing in midtown, and affirms that demand for places to live within a short walking distance of campus is on the rise.
UB President
Robert L. Bogomolny said the development is another indication that central Baltimore's many amenities, including the convenient location of Penn Station as a major transportation hub for the entire mid-Atlantic corridor, are important keys to the city's future.
"In the past five years we have seen a lot of interest in the establishment of new residential and retail ventures, including our own Fitzgerald project," Bogomolny said. "All kinds of people, including college students, are interested in living in the middle of the city. The site for this project is ideal. It's within steps of Penn Station, and quite close to the heart of our campus. We think it's going to be a very popular place."
Potomac Holdings President
Donnie Gross said his firm is looking forward to this endeavor, which is another example of UB's impact on investment in midtown Baltimore and its built environment.
"Potomac Holdings is excited to provide the University of Baltimore its first student housing development," Gross said. "As we looked for future student housing projects in the mid-Atlantic a year ago, we were instantly drawn to UB for its vibrancy, vision and their committed personnel."
